HIKING AT HOTEL RÖMERRAST ON THE SOUTH TYROLEAN WINE ROUTE

At Hotel Römerrast, you’ll find the perfect base for unforgettable hiking days. Right outside your door, several picturesque trails begin, including one that leads to the fascinating natural phenomenon of the ice holes, a refreshing retreat, especially on hot summer days.

Trail No. 15 takes you from Pianizza di Sopra through stunning landscapes, ensuring an unforgettable nature experience. This way, you can enjoy carefree days immersed in nature, without the need to drive or worry about the hustle and bustle.

Pianizza di Sopra is located right on the Mendola Pass Road, with the Mendola Pass (1,364 meters) – a popular summer retreat – always in sight. You can drive up to the top or leave your car behind and take the eco-friendly Mendola Cable Car, which will whisk you to the hiking area in just 12 minutes. It's one of the steepest and longest funiculars in Europe – an experience not to be missed during your stay.

The Caldaro High Route winds along the midsection of the Mendola Ridge, offering stunning panoramic views. From the pass, hikers can reach the Roen peak at 2,116 meters in about 2.5 hours. The summit is one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the southern Alps, providing spectacular vistas of the Dolomites and the Brenta Group.

The wild and romantic gorge between Castelvecchio Forest and Lake Caldaro invites you to embark on an impressive and diverse canyon hike. Along the spectacular circular route, you’ll encounter a waterfall, steep staircases, rustic wooden walkways, and historic ruins – all while the views of the lake and surrounding nature shift, offering new perspectives with every step. The trailhead in the St. Anton sports area is easily accessible via the Caldaro city bus, which stops just a short walk from our hotel.

Alternatively, you can begin your hike from San Giuseppe al Lago and make your way up to the panoramic trail. We particularly recommend this themed hike in spring and autumn for the best experience.
